Detection dogs are highly effective and offer a unique perspective when used for security purposes or as part of police work. Humans rely predominantly on site, whereas dogs rely on their sense of smell to interpret their environment. A search dog’s sense of smell is at least 10000 times greater than the average human, opening countless opportunities for searching and tracking.
On top of this, detection dogs can also search an area four times faster than a human can (and with greater accuracy too!). So, when it comes to search and detection, humans are no match for a trained detection dog.
Detection dogs are the most effective way of quickly searching a person or an area for illegal drugs. They can be trained to detect almost any drug, but some of the more common ones searched for and found are Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin, Crystal Meth, MDMA, Xanax, Adderall, Opioids’, Opiates, K2 (also known as spice), Fentanyl.
